T20 World Cup 2024: How Can Pakistan Still Qualify for Super 8s Stage After Loss to India?

Pakistan are currently languishing at the bottom of the Group A points table.

Pakistan suffered a narrow six runs defeat against the arch-rivals India on June 9 at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium. Pakistan is languishing in fourth place of Group A, behind India, USA, and Canada.

With two matches remaining – against Canada and Ireland – victories are mandatory for Pakistan to stay alive. Rain washouts would further complicate matters. Here’s how Pakistan can qualify for Super 8 stage:

  • Win Both Remaining Matches: Victories against Canada and Ireland are essential.
  • Favourable Results from Others: Pakistan needs either India or USA to lose their remaining matches.
  • Avoiding a Washout: A washout in the upcoming India vs USA match would grant both teams a point, hindering Pakistan’s qualification chances.
  • Canada’s Performance: Pakistan also needs Canada to lose to India or, if Canada wins, to have a lower Net Run Rate (NRR).
  • Net Run Rate Advantage: Even with wins and losses falling into place, NRR could be the deciding factor if Pakistan and USA end up tied on points.

Pakistan’s bowlers displayed brilliance, restricting India to a meagre 119 runs. Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah shone with three wickets each, while Mohammad Amir chipped in with two.

However, Pakistan’s batting collapsed during the chase. After losing Babar Azam early, Mohammad Rizwan provided some resistance with 31 runs. Despite being in a comfortable position at 72-2, a sudden collapse saw them lose six wickets for just 40 runs in the final overs.

Jasprit Bumrah’s match-winning spell earned him the Player of the Match award, while Hardik Pandya also contributed with two wickets.
