Teams Must Begin Over in 60 Seconds: ICC Brings New Rule Before T20 World Cup 2024

This new rule by ICC will lead teams to adopt a more vigilant approach towards time management and view it with greater importance.

The highly-anticipated ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 will commence on June 1st. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has released a significant rule that will be implemented starting from the T20 World Cup 2024 to prevent time wasting.

Beginning with the T20 World Cup – teams will have 60 seconds to start the next over. Two warnings will be issued, with a 5-run penalty on the third instance. This rule is introduced due to excessive time wasting during overs changes.

T20 Cricket, the shortest format of the game, was introduced to captivate audiences within a brief timeframe and ensure optimal game engagement. However, recently, teams have been consuming excessive time, whether during over-changes or setting the field.

Although there’s a rule requiring teams to add an extra fielder if they exceed the allotted time while bowling in the final overs, it hasn’t proven very effective, as some teams continue to flout it.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is confident that implementing a new rule mandating a 60-second limit to start the next over will encourage teams to be more time-conscious and take the matter seriously.
