What Did Congress Leader Shama Mohamed Say About Rohit Sharma? Here’s Her Controversial Post
Congress leader Shama Mohamed’s post calling Rohit Sharma “fat” and “unimpressive” sparked backlash.

Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed sparked a controversy with her remarks on Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma. She called him “fat” and “unimpressive” in a social media post, leading to widespread criticism from fans and political opponents.
During India’s match against New Zealand, Ms Mohamed posted on X (formerly Twitter), saying:
“Rohit Sharma is fat for a sportsman! Need to lose weight! And of course the most unimpressive Captain India has ever had!”
This statement angered cricket fans, who defended Rohit by pointing out his achievements as a captain. Many criticized Ms Mohamed for body-shaming a national player.
Despite the backlash, Ms Mohamed did not back down. She compared Rohit Sharma to previous Indian captains and questioned his leadership.
She brought up Rohit’s decision during the MCG Test, saying:
“Didn’t he move KL Rahul to bat at number 3 and put himself at number 1? That backfired! Wasn’t that a selfish move? Because of that, Shubman Gill was out of the XI.”
She also blamed him for India’s World Cup final loss in Ahmedabad, saying:
“Didn’t we lose the last World Cup which took place in Ahmedabad? I have compared him to our previous captains.”
Calling Rohit Sharma ‘Mediocre’
Ms Mohamed continued to attack Rohit Sharma, calling him a “mediocre player” and a “mediocre captain”. She compared him with past cricket legends, saying:
“What is so world-class about him when compared to his predecessors like Ganguly, Tendulkar, Dravid, Dhoni, Kohli, Kapil Dev, and Shastri? He is a mediocre captain and a mediocre player who got lucky to be the Captain of India.”
Her Response to the Criticism
Facing intense backlash, Ms Mohamed defended herself, saying her comment was not body-shaming but a general opinion on fitness. She told ANI:
“It was just a generic tweet about the fitness of a sportsperson. A sportsperson has to be fit. I felt he is a bit overweight, so I tweeted on that. I am being attacked for no reason.”
She further argued:
“India is a democracy. I have the right to speak. What’s wrong in saying this?”
Ms Mohamed also praised Virat Kohli, recalling how he supported Mohammed Shami when the pacer faced criticism. She admired Kohli’s leadership, saying:
“Virat Kohli leads from the front. He scores runs. He hugs young players and appreciates opponents. That is leadership.”
