Women’s IPL Named As “Women’s Premier League”, Confirms BCCI

The BCCI has officially launched the Women's Premier League.

In a historic development, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) launched the Women’s franchise tournament and named it the Women’s Premier League (WPL).

This followed the Indian cricket board’s sale of the tournament’s media rights for an impressive amount of INR 951 Crores. Five teams were successfully acquired for the first edition of the tournament.

“BCCI announces the successful bidders for Women’s Premier League. The combined bid valuation is INR 4669.99 Cr. A look at the Five franchises with ownership rights for #WPL.”

Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals owners acquired teams from their respective cities while India’s leading business conglomerate Adani Group and Capri Global got teams from Ahmedabad and Lucknow respectively.

Jay Shah Launches Women’s, Premier League

Earlier, BCCI secretary Jay Shah had confirmed that the women’s T20 league is officially named the Women’s Premier League (WPL). In a series of tweets, Shah also revealed that the bids for the WPL have broken the records set by its men’s counterpart in 2008.

“Today is a historic day in cricket as the bidding for teams of the inaugural WPL broke the records of the inaugural Men’s IPL in 2008,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah tweeted.

“Congratulations to the winners as we garnered Rs.4669.99 Cr in total bid. This marks the beginning of a revolution in women’s cricket and paves the way for a transformative journey ahead not only for our women cricketers but for the entire sports fraternity.”

“The WPL would bring necessary reforms in women’s cricket and would ensure an all-encompassing ecosystem that benefits each and every stakeholder.”
