IND vs AUS: Mayank Agarwal Becomes 3rd Fastest Indian to Complete 1000 Test Runs

Indian opener Mayank Agarwal on Saturday became the third-fastest Indian after Vinod Kambli and Cheteshwar Pujara to reach 1,000 Test runs in the ongoing Adelaide Test against Australia.

The Indian opening batsman hit a boundary off the bowling of Mitchell Starc in the very first over of day three and as a result, he brought up his 1000 runs in Test cricket.

As an opener, he was ahead of Sunil Gavaskar (21 innings), Sanjay Manjrekar, Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly (23 innings). The fastest batsman to score 1000 Test runs in the world is Herbert Sutcliffe of Australia who has achieved this feat in just 12 innings.

Agarwal becomes the third fastest Indian batsman to have touched this figure in Test cricket. Former opener Vinod Kambli holds the top spot as he went past the mark in just 14 innings. Pujara took 18 innings to touch the milestone.

Mayank Agarwal has shown the ability to play the long innings in his short Test career thus far. The 29-year old has converted two of his three hundred in Test cricket into double centuries, including the highest score of 243 runs.

India’s Disastrous Display

India came up with a disastrous batting display in the Adelaide Test as they were all out for just 36 to register their lowest score in Tests. The previous lowest total for India was 42 which came against England in 1974. Not a single batsman managed to touch the double-digit mark with Mayank Agarwal’s 9 being the highest score.

For the hosts, Josh Hazlewood was the star with the ball as he picked up 5 wickets for just 8 runs while Pat Cummins picked up 4 wickets. Both the teams will play three more Tests before India return home and prepare for the home series against England. Kohli will return to action again with the resumption of the home season.
