Sri Lanka, on Thursday (October 20) squeezed past the Netherlands by 16 runs to qualify for the Super 12 round of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia.
Chasing a stiff target of 163 runs, Max O’Dowd provided the Netherlands with a flying start. However, he couldn’t get enough support from the other end as wickets kept falling like packs of cards with their batters failing to occupy the crease.
Max O’Dowd single-handedly pushed the Netherlands’ to 146 for nine with an unbeaten 71 off just 53 balls. His belligerent knock was studded with six monstrous sixes and three boundaries.
For the Lankan Lions, Wanindu Hasaranga picked three wickets while conceding 28 runs in his four overs spell. Maheesh Theekshana also grabbed a couple of wickets while Lahiru Kumara had one to his name.
Kusal Mendis’ Masterclass Propels Sri Lanka to 162/6
Opting to bat first, Sri Lanka posted a challenging total of 162 runs for the loss of six wickets in the stipulated 20 overs. Kusal Mendis was the chief architect with 79 runs off 44 balls, with the help of five fours and as many sixes.
The likes of Pathum Nissanka (14 off 21), Charith Asalanka (21 off 30), and Bhanuka Rajapaksa (19 off 13) also chipped in with handy contributions with the bat.
For the Netherlands, Paul van Meekeren and Bas de Leede picked a couple of wickets each while Fred Klaassen and Timm Van Der Gugten also picked a wicket apiece.
Sri Lanka will now have to wait for the result of the next game between Namibia and the UAE to ascertain whether they will play in Super 12 Group 1 or 2.
