Which Team Has Won the Most Matches in T20 World Cup History?

Sri Lanka holds the record of most wins in the T20 World Cup history.

The 2024 Men’s ICC T20 World Cup is just around the corner, with the action kicking off in the Caribbean and USA on June 1st. This year’s edition will be the biggest yet, featuring an expanded format with 20 teams battling it out across four groups.

But before the action unfolds, let’s take a look at the teams with the most wins in T20 World Cup history:

Sri Lanka (31 Wins)

Sri Lanka sits at the top in terms of total wins. They are the only team to have crossed the 30-win mark. The 2014 champions have secured 31 victories in a total of 50 T20 World Cup appearances.

Pakistan (28 Wins)

Pakistan have also secured 28 wins throughout the tournament’s history. However, with 47 matches played, Pakistan has also faced 19 losses, including the infamous Bowl-Out defeat to India in 2007. The Men in Green lifted the trophy in the 2009 edition, defeating Sri Lanka in the final, and were most recently runners-up in the 2022 edition of the tournament, played in Australia.

India (27 Wins)

The champions of the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup have accumulated 27 wins in 44 matches. Interestingly, one of those victories came through the only Bowl-Out ever seen in a T20 World Cup, against Pakistan in 2007.

Australia have secured 25 wins out of the 40 T20 World matches they played till date. They won the 2021 edition of the T20 World Cup under Aaron Finch’s captaincy, beating New Zealand by 8-wickets at Dubai.

South Africa (24 Wins)

South Africa has managed to win 24 matches out of the 40 matches that they played in T20 World Cups. They are yet to win the World Cup. In fact they have even failed to make it to the final in the eight T20 World Cup editions.
